In 1941 when Germany started to invade the Soviet Union the industries of the Soviet Union were in danger of becoming German territory. In response, Stalin ordered a mass evacuation and relocation of their key industrial centers needed during the war to a town where the Germans could not reach called Ulyanovsk. The birth of UAZ (Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant) became one of the leading industries in Ulyanovsk, creating complex military vehicles.
In 1972 a new UAZ model called 469, burst through as the best military vehicle of its time. The 469 is best known for its all-terrain ability, simplicity in design, reliability and easy maintenance. In the 1990s UAZ received the Golden Globe and Golden Mercury awards for a significant volume of sales for its legendary off-road vehicle and it helps to the Russian Economy. Various models of the 469 model have been recreated since the 1970s and are still used today in the Russian military. While the 469 isn't the most comfortable of vehicles, some off-road enthusiasts even prefer it to Jeep, Land Rover, and Land Cruiser.
This particular 469 is something a little more special; it was originally equipped for use in the field as a chemical reconnaissance vehicle. In place of back seats is a bench seat that contains two large storage compartments. Moved all the way to the rear. In front of them used to sit large cabinets that held radio and chemical detection equipment. With idling and observation being the main goal of this UAZ, the military equipped it with an auxiliary engine that was used to keep the engine and coolant at top temperature. Perfect for idling in even the coldest and remote regions of Siberia. Inside and out you will see amazing pieces of history, included are rifle mounts, first aid kit, and even an original booklet that explains some of the equipment originally in this UAZ.
