This rare Indian Chief is highly original and 100% complete. It offers a unique and affordable opportunity for a motoring enthusiast, collector, or restoration specialist! The engine cranks over by hand smooth and easy with spark plugs removed, and the cylinder walls have no damage. We have confirmed that the ignition system works as designed and has a spark. It has not run in 10-12 years, as it was previously part of the famous John Parham Estate Collection. The engine would have to be disassembled for inspection before running it, or the bike could be used as a display piece. RETROSPECTIVE ON THE INDIAN - ROYAL ENFIELD CHIEF 700cc MOTORCYCLES PRODUCED BETWEEN 1959 AND 1961:
• Background: After the original Indian motorcycle company closed in 1953, Brockhouse Engineering acquired the name and began selling rebadged Royal Enfield motorcycles through Indian dealerships.
• Models: The Indian Chief 700cc was available in two main versions: the sporty Apache and the touring-oriented Trailblazer. Both featured Royal Enfield’s 700cc vertical-twin engine.
• Design and Features: The Chief had a semi-unit construction engine, dry-sump lubrication, and separate cylinder barrels and heads for better cooling. The Apache had a higher compression ratio and more horsepower compared to the Trailblazer.
• Americanization: To appeal to American buyers, the Chief was modified with features like 16-inch wheels, a larger front fender, and an American-made speedometer. A police version was also available.
• Market Performance: Despite these efforts, the Indian/Royal Enfield models did not sell well, with only about 7,000 units sold over seven years. The partnership ended in 1962, and the Indian name fell into disuse.
