Zaporozhets (ZAZ) was a series of rear-wheel-drive cars produced by ZAZ (Zaporozhsky Avtomobilny Zavod) factory in Ukraine. Different models of Zaporozhets, all of which had an air-cooled engine in the rear, were produced until 1994.
Zaporozhets was designed to be a "people's car" in the Soviet Union, and it was indeed the most affordable vehicle in the USSR. However, it did not become as common on USSR roads as the Trabant in East Germany, due to the ZAZ factory's inability to produce enough cars to meet the ever-growing demand.
ZAZ 965 became the first vehicle for many Soviet people, and it was known for its remarkable performance on poor roads due to its independent suspension and engine sitting on top of driving wheels. It was also easy to service, with a basic design and easily accessible compartments.
When the ZAZ 965 ended in 1969, only 322,116 of them were built. Out of this minimal amount, only a few survived. The original ZAZ 965 is a rare find, even in Europe.
